SA's Minister of Water, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, praised the Western Cape agricultural sector for complying with water measures in the ongoing drought. She visited farms in the province with Agri Western Cape's CEO, Mr Carl Opperman, on Saturday 27 January.

Agri Western Cape President Cornie Swart has been elected as the new Chairperson of Agri SA's General Chamber.

The ongoing drought in the Western Cape, regarded as the province’s worst in over a century, is not sparing anything as game in the Karoo is losing the battle against the severe water shortages in this drought disaster area.

Congratulations to Mr Hugo de Waal for being elected as new Vice-President of Agri Western Cape, and Mr Cornie Swart who was re-elected as President during the 2017 annual congress.

Agri Western Cape is still assisting producers in the province's drought stricken areas as the province remains in the grip of the worst drought in decades.

Producers in the southern Cape also suffered huge damages when fires swept through the area, burning houses to the ground and killing livestock.

Devastating fires in the Western Cape have caused damages to hundreds of hectares of vineyards, orchards and agricultural infrastructure, putting the #agri sector still suffering from the drought under more pressure.

Western Cape agriculture is lucky to have water and sustainability expert Mr André Roux from the provincial Department of Agriculture in the sector. He is the Agriculturist of the Year for 2016, an award well deserved.

Agri Western Cape President Mr Cornie Swart has been re-elected as vice-chairperson of Agri SA's general chamber during Agri SA's 2016 congress in Gauteng.

Agri Western Cape presented its strategic crime prevention plan to the Western Cape's Department of Community Safety, and was praised for coming to the table with potential solutions to the escalating crime in our rural areas.

Thanks to generous donations by Western Cape producers, Agri Western Cape can also support producers in other provinces with critically needed animal feed. Two loads were delivered to the drought stricken area of Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape province this week.

Livestock producers in Kliprand on the West Coast suffered another dry season and are in dire need of feed. Producers from Hermon in the Cape Winelands generously donated feed that Agri Western Cape distributed to producers in the Kliprand area.

Livestock producers still need feed critically. Thanks to donations by producers in Caledon in the Overberg who had feed to spare, Agri Western Cape could deliver a load to the drought stricken Beaufort West in the Klein Karoo.

Charmaine Scholtz (with AWC CEO Mr Carl Opperman) was named the Fruit Industry's Specialist Farm Worker of the Year 2016. Agri Western Cape is the proud sponsor of this category and believes in honoring those who contribute to #GrowingGreatness in our agri sector.

A sure sign that summer is fast approaching, is the beautiful fruit blossoms that decorate the Western Cape this time of year. These peaches-to-be will soon be available on both local and international markets.

The Philippi Horticultural Area on the Cape Flats provides the majority of Cape Town's fresh vegetables. These dedicated producers are Growing Greatness all year round.

Did you know that a quarter of the wool in South Africa and 100% of the lucrative mohair business comes from the Karoo? Another fine export product from our outstanding producers, being enjoyed by Riley van Wyk from Beaufort West.

Well done to Ms Minnie Green, winner of the 2016 Felco Farm Worker Pruning Competition held by the Franschhoek Agriculture Association recently. This highly skilled lady adds so much value to the region's wine industry. #Proud!

Agri Western Cape rewarded Mr Neil Hamman for 9 years of dedicated service to agriculture. He received the honorary award from AWC's President, Mr Cornie Swart and Vice President, Koot Claassen.

Agri Western Cape President Mr Cornie Swart and Vice-president Mr Koot Claassen recently helped to distribute 20 000 litres of water, donated by Pick'nPay, to residents of Goedverwacht near Piketberg in the Western Cape.

Cape Foods' Executive Director, Mr Gerhard Martin, handed a cheque to Agri Western Cape towards the Agri Western Cape Drought Relief Fund. We value their support of agriculture.

500 bales of donated barley will bring much needed relief to livestock farmers in the drought stricken area of Graafwater. Thank you to the Swellendam producer who donated the feed, and Velox Logistix for the transport.

Hoër Landbouskool Oakdale was goed verteenwoordig tydens Agri Wes-Kaap se streekkongres op Riversdal met 'n hele klomp oud-leerders wat deesdae hulle merk in die landbousektor maak.

Voerskenkings deur Wes-Kaapse landbouers is onder veeprodusente in die Hopefield-omgewing versprei waar slegs sowat 132 mm reën die afgelope produksiejaar geval het. Dankie aan elke produsent wat voer geskenk het.

Kevin van Wyk, Beaufort West producer and member of Agri Western Cape's Young Farmer and Communication Policy committees, was elected as Agri Western Cape's new regional representative for the Beaufort West area.

Areas in red have already been declared disaster areas after SA was hit by one of the most severe droughts in years. Should the Western Cape not get sufficient rainfall soon, they too may end up in the red.

We were deeply touched by residents of a retirement home in Paarl who collected R11 000 among them to contribute to Agri Western Cape's drought relief fund. We are thankful for the gesture of goodwill.

Nog 'n vrag veevoer uit die Wes-Kaap het verlede week verligting aan veeboere in die Vrystaat gebring. Dankie aan Danie Koch en Tiekie Bester van Moorreesburg vir die skenking, en vir Sean Myburg van DPMM Hauliers vir die vervoer.

Western Cape's cherries are ripe and ready for the picking. An estimated 100 tons of juicy and sweet cherries will be picked for the local market this season on Hoogland Farm in Ceres, the farm of Mr Piet Karsten, SA's Farmer of the Year for 2015.

Kapt Pieter Pienaar, sektorbevelvoerder en Frans Pietersen, organiseerder van die Overhex Plaaswag, doen uitstekende werk om saam met produsente, plaaswerkers en ander rolspelers toe te sien dat hulle omgewing beveilig word.

Koringprodusente in die Kaapse Metropool het begin stroop na een van die droogste winters sedert 1947. Die voorsitter van Agri Wes-Kaap se Algemene Sakekamer, Villiers Loubser, sê die gebied het in September heeltemal te min reen gekry vir die koring om normaal ryp te word en gaan vanjaar se oes kleiner as verlede jaar sin wees.

Jongboer van die Jaar: Carl van der Merwe, ’n appels- en pereprodusent van Ceres in die Koue Bokkeveld, is aangewys as die Wes-Kaap se Jongboer van die Jaar 2015.

Young Farmer of the Year: Carl van der Merwe, Western Cape Young Farmer of the Year, will be competing at national level in the Agri SA Toyota Young Farmer 2015 Competition. The winner will be announced in October.
